THE ISSUE: Layoffs affect more than just a person’s financial situation. Layoffs affect a person’s self-worth. Displaced workers are more likely to have mental health issues, to become homeless or to even become abusive. The stress of not having a steady income increases the possibility of turning to alcohol or drugs or contemplating suicide — all leading to an unending hopelessness. A hopelessness that saps them of a reason to fight, a reason to carry on and a reason to live. SEE STATS
RESULTS: After large numbers of layoffs began in 2001, United Way of the Plains began coordination of the Help Center for Laid-Off Workers. From 2001 to 2004 the center provided coordinated one-stop services. Most importantly the center gave these workers hope. Hope that helped them continue the struggle. Hope to not give up. The center served 2,213 laid-off workers plus their families. SEE ACTIONS
